What it does not do
- This works by matching colour outward from the edges of the image. It is built for plain, evenly lit or single-colour backgrounds: product shots, logos, headshots on a studio backdrop, screenshots.
- It is not a trained subject-segmentation model. A busy street scene, or a subject that shares its colour with the background, will not cut out cleanly.
- Fine detail such as loose hair and semi-transparent fabric will lose some accuracy at the edge.
Frequently asked questions
- What kind of images does this work well on?
- Anything on a plain or evenly lit background: product photography, logos, headshots on a studio backdrop, screenshots, flat illustrations. Leo samples the edges of the image, works out what the background is, and removes everything that matches within your tolerance.
- What does it struggle with?
- Cluttered or detailed backgrounds, and subjects whose colour is close to the background. It is a colour-matched cut-out rather than a trained subject-detection model, so it does not guess at what the subject is.
- Can I put a different background behind it?
- Yes, you can composite the cut-out onto a solid colour before downloading, or keep it transparent and place it elsewhere.
- What format do I get back?
- A PNG with a real alpha channel, at the same resolution as the image you uploaded.
- Is my image uploaded?
- No. The cut-out is computed in your browser. Leo receives the finished PNG only when you choose to download or save it.
